I received an email asking that I share how to blog effectively. Hmmmm? Effectively. Now that’s something to ponder!
Adjective: Successful in producing a desired or intended result.
Synonyms: efficacious, effectual, efficient, operative, telling
This is actually quite funny because in the definition you see the word ‘efficient’. I’m not the most efficient person when it comes to time management! As a matter of fact, that is my “one weakness” (for those of you who are Larkrise to Candleford fans!). And even though effective and efficient are similar, I rate more highly in the effective camp!
I’m new to blogging but I’ve done much research, have a blogger friend who offers ideas, and have discovered a few tips of my own. I’ll share those in my next post. But, even though I may not be efficient in blogging, I feel that I might be effective. Time will tell if I’m ‘producing a desired or intended result’ as my blog gets more viewers and I get more comments. I’ll keep you ‘posted’ (pun intended!).
Having time for blogging is probably the biggest hurdle for busy moms. Blogging does take time and focus! Just like any activity in my life, I find I don’t get things done that I don’t make time for. So – if you really want to blog and you really believe you are called to do this, then you will need to set aside time and space to get it done. Oh, that’s not a fun thing to hear, but it’s true! So, first you’ll have to search: your heart, to see if you have the desire; and your schedule, to see if you can make that time.
And here’s the really hard part! If you really don’t have time, then maybe this is not the season for a blog. Yikes, I can’t believe I said that! I don’t like to wait for anything! And I don’t want to hinder any of you, but in looking at my own life, I realize that I had to wait years to take the first step towards my dream of writing my ‘book’. And out of that dream, my website/blog was created! I simply didn’t have the time before. I was too busy raising my family and learning the lessons that I now share.
Please don’t let this news stop you! You can begin now to prepare for a future blog. What I do recommend, if you don’t have time for a blog now, is journaling! Journaling trains you to think through topics and get your thoughts down on ‘paper’. Journaling takes less time, less organization, less stress of deadlines (you will feel pressure to post!), and less stress of knowing other people will read your words and thoughts (misspellings and bad grammar included!). Yet, it offers you a private place to record your many thoughts and dreams and lessons. Then, when you are ready for blogging, you’ll have many topics already in print, and your brain is in gear to write more quickly and efficiently.
In my next post, I’ll share some tips for blogging that I’ve learned in the short time I’ve been doing this. There is much information on the web, and the main ideas are simple and effective, but they do take TIME. So take some time right now to ask yourself some basic questions about your priorities, your purpose for blogging, your season of life, and your schedule. And don’t forget to pray. Ask God to show you what’s real and what’s not in your life and goals. Then, if blogging is for you, read on!
